The beauty of the Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus of Rhodes was standing at the coast on the artificially made hill covered with marble. Twelve years nobody saw the statue because when the structure had the additional belt of the bronze leaves, the hill was increased so that it would be more comfortable to work getting up to the top of the statue. And only when the hill was destroyed the population of Rhodes saw the god-patron the head of which was decorated with the shinning wreath.
The shinning god was seen far from the sea and soon the talks about the monument to Helios spread all over the Ancient World. But in 50 years the powerful earthquake destroyed the statue making it fall. And the most fragile place of the statue resulted to be knees.
People of Rhodes tried to elevate the statue. And there were even some attempts to help them from the neighbour countries and cities. The Egyptian ruler sent several tones of copper and a lot of experts. But all attempts were useless. And the Colossus lying on the coast became the greatest place of interest of this city.
And this statue was so big that people couldn't even encompass the first finger. People started to create a lot of legends and the statue was covered with dust. In the Roman literature there were stories that said the statue was so big that the ships were able to come under the legs of the statue. And during millennium the statue was lying in such position until in 977 this statue was sold to one of the traders in 977.
