The Statue of Zeus at Olympia

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was the only wonder of the world that was situated in Europe. There was no temple in Hellas that seemed to be worth being named the Miracle. And when they chose Olympia as the wonder they remembered not the Temple but only the statue that was inside it.

Zeus was directly connected with Olympia. Every inhabitant of those places remembered perfectly that this was the place where Zeus got the victory over Crone that was his father who was afraid his sons will take his power away.

And the main treasure of Olympia was the Temple of Zeus with the statue made by the great Phidius. Phidius was famous not only by his statue to Zeus but also by the statue in Athens. Several years he was working on the statue.

It was situated in the Temple and was 64 meters in height and 28 in width. The height of the inner room was about 20 meters. And the statue was Zeus sitting in the throne and his head was reaching the ceiling. Zeus was made of the wood and his body was covered with the rosy elephant ivory. His clothes were the golden leaves and he had the statue of Nica in one hand and was holding the high rod.

According to legend when the author finished his work he came to look at his masterpiece and asked Zeus if he was satisfied by the work. The answer was the thunder and the flour near the statue's legs broke. Zeus was satisfied.

The descriptions of the Zeus's throne are left. It was decorated with bas-relief from the elephant ivory and the gold. And the sides of the throne had different images.
